WSC Nets $23.2 Million for Veterans in FY 2023
Veteran service officers (VSOs) affiliated with the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) are helping former service members and families throughout the country.
With an estimated 561,869 veterans, VVA’s Washington State Council (WSC) operates two programs: its regular program, which operates in multiple locations throughout the state, and one covering Clark County only. Together, they employ eight VSOs and one trainee.
The regular program had an 88% success rate on service-connected (SC) claims and a 100% success rate on non-service-connected (NSC) claims for the fiscal year ending in June 2023. That represents more than $20 million in SC claims (up $3.7 million from the previous fiscal year) and $233,218 in NSC claims (up $115,624).
The smaller Clark County program had a 90% success rate on SC claims, helping veterans access just under $3 million in benefits.
The council reports that claims success rates are rising in the new fiscal year. Program managers Francisco Ivarra, WSC president; Odis Warren, treasurer; and Jennie Ebert, chief VSO, are monitoring claims volume to determine whether more staff is needed to handle the many requests. Here’s to their good work!
