VSO Wins DIC Compensation for Surviving Spouse
In Massachusetts recently, veteran service officers helped a veteran and his spouse fight a decrease in benefits. Following a discrepancy in diagnosis, the Veterans Administration had threatened to cut his benefits from 90% service-connected disability to 60%.
Sadly, the veteran passed away from his service-connected disability before a supplemental claim could be examined. VSOs submitted the surviving spouse for substitution and helped her apply for burial and DIC compensation.
Reduction averted, the surviving spouse got full service-connected funeral benefits and DIC awards, plus a retroactive payment of more than $12,000.
Contact a VVA Veteran Service Officer to assist with your claim in states that have a benefits program here, or search for a VSO from another organization through the VA’s website in states where we do not. Enter your ZIP code or city and state, and you’ll see which VSOs serve your area.
