Veteran’s Spouse Gets Pension, New Apartment

A Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) veteran service officer (VSO) in Massachusetts recently helped another veteran spouse access benefits. The veteran had been receiving a VA pension prior to his death, and his spouse included medical records with the claim.

She received a letter denying her a pension because the Veterans Benefits Administration had requested treatment records from the Veterans Health Administration and was told that no records could be found.

The VSO filed a Supplemental Claim and a 21-4138 form explaining that the medical records were included with the claim. The spouse was awarded a pension and was able to move from an unheated attic to a low-income apartment as a result.

Contact a VVA Veteran Service Officer to assist with your claim in states that have a benefits program here, or search for a VSO from another organization through the VA’s website in states where we do not. Enter your ZIP code or city and state, and you’ll see which VSOs serve your area.
