Surviving Spouse Regains Financial Stability
Ohio’s Department of Veterans Affairs recently referred a surviving spuse from Toledo to the local Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) service office. She had experienced significant financial hardships following the death of her husband and was no longer able to afford to remain in their home.
Veteran service officers (VSOs) reviewed the spouse’s situation, determining she was eligible for Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) benefits. The office submitted required documentation including VA Form 21P-534EZ and provided continuous representation throughout the claims process.
With sustained advocacy and careful case management, the spouse’s claim was approved. She was awarded survivor benefits and received a retroactive payment of more than $15,000, which provided immediate financial relief. She is now able to live comfortably, meet her daily needs, and enjoy a renewed sense of stability and peace of mind.
This underscores the role that VVA VSOs play in ensuring surviving spouses receive the benefits their loved ones earned through service. Timely referrals, knowledgeable representation and persistent advocacy can make a life-changing difference for veterans’ families.
Contact a VVA Veteran Service Officer to assist with your claim in states that have a benefits program here, or search for a VSO from another organization through the VA’s website in states where we do not. Enter your ZIP code or city and state, and you’ll see which VSOs serve your area.
